Ive had my first pumpkin female flower open up but the was no male flowers around(bit like the bars round here). Is this first one doomed to rot of and die if it doesnt get pollinated?, I found a courgette male and put the flower pollen from that inside this pumpkin flower head(well tried as the courgette one was rather wet!),what with pumpkins . courgettes being of the same family.......
I assume it has to be pollinated to grow??
A fellow A4A poster, Galina I think is the best person to ask. Squashes generally refer to four species of the genus Cucurbita which inclide include C. maxima (hubbard squash, buttercup squash, some varieties of prize pumpkins, such as Big Max), C. mixta (cushaw squash), C. moschata (butternut squash), and C. pepo.
I think Galina said that they do not polinate or cross with one another but I could have misinterpreated it so please seek check if you can. Not sure about the courgette pollinating the pumpkin.
Lots of females have opened on my squash plants but they just get filled up with water as it has been raining. Pretty sure that water in the flower will prevent pollination. Dont worry more females/males will be up soon

Jeannine also knows loads about squashes, maybe she'll be along too. But I think you're right, Dandytown, it depends on the 'group' your two plants belong to. But then you had a go, can't hurt, can it? Fingers crossed...
