Title: Parsnips sown until end of July???
Post by: Jeannine on July 18, 2011, 02:57:56
I just found this in a seed catalogue for West Coast  seeds, sowing info for parsnips, sow until the end of July. I find it odd..what do others think.

I might phone them..

Yes it doesn't sound right..unless you like 'baby' parsnips..not the 'toddle' type but proper 'new born' ;D
When does the growing season come to an end there? With late autumn I suppose you could get some sort of finger thick roots.. :-\

They also say to try a late July to August planting of peas, would not work here but for you...

Javlin parsnips 110 days to harvest, takes you up to say end of October beginning of November. Is that still growing season for you? I planted some Javlin I think mid march perhaps beginning of April, I started harvesting them last week. Not huge roots but very acceptable, so timescale would be right.

Well my thinking is its wet and warm ideal germination time which might help things along :)

The next plot to  me had surprisingly large parsnips from a very late sowing last year but it do think it was june.

I  have some self sown, so I might leave a few as an experiment.  They can act as green manure if there is nothing worth eating.
