Is it too late to sow over wintering onion seeds. I have a packet of sensyhu seeds. IF I am ,when should I have sown them?
Duke
NOT AT ALL.. ;D..perfect time.. ;)
My Sensyhu packet says sow in August so guess you've got plenty of time.
Just about to start ailsa craig :)
Ooh glad I saw this, I hadn;t thought of that at all! I'll get sowing. Which is good in this weather.
I have just cleaned out my brassica trays and on the advice of a few people am going to do one tray of overwintering onions and compare this to a row of seed sown in situ and see what the results are..
Thought ailsa craig was a summer onion
. . .Just what I was thinking too Lottie Lou

sorry, these are for our mp compost/peat free and coir trial. Any that do come up are going under cover to see how they go. I always thought long red florence was a spring sown but my franchi seed say autumn and they've turned up with amazing sized onions from a july sowing :)

Senshyu are a common type. I did a red onion called 'di Savona' or 'savonese' last winter and it did very well.
You can sow seeds direct, sow in cells and transplant or buy sets. I think sets would not be until Autumn. But sow now.
Some shallots like Jermor can also be overwintered.

Great. I sowed my savonese onions today. Finally! ::)
I've grown a few Long Red Florence (Rossa Lunga di Firenze) for use fresh and small in autumn, in the past, and they were great. I've never overwintered onions from seed before, though. Is it worth trying any onion old seed or shallot varieties we might have, or is it better to stick to certain ones?
Spudbash :)
PS I'm wondering how much to 'invest' at my local Wyevale, when the prices go down again!
I have a packet of Ailsa Craig that I am at a loss to use. Can I sow them now and get spring onions out of them in the autumn? Or will they fail to thrive now? I can't really manage getting onions from seed, I find that too hard, but I wouldn't say no to some baby onions.
overwintered long red florence . New seedlings ready to go into the ground in september :)
So do you plant long red from seed in July....and harvest next spring??
it worked last year so I'm trying it again, they stood -10 degrees overwinter with no protection
That sounds a good idea. I have a spare bed and love red onions!!!!
