His nest came down last week following heavy rain; unfortunately his siblings didn't make it. I spotted him on the patio where he was sitting as still as anything. Initially he didn't move at all when I picked him up. But as I scooped up the remains of the soft part of the nest he wriggled free from my hand and held on tight to my t-shirt. Which is why my favourite gardening t-shirt is now part of his temporary home getting pooed on regularly.
Have to say I was glad no one was around when I carefully stripped off in the garden with chick attached to shirt!
The parents continue to feed him, I'm hoping he is hidden well enough to keep him safe.
Ahhhh thats so cute - what a lovely person you are although I think most people on the forums would do the same aswell because we are lovely people :) :)
ahhh.. ;D ..and you gave the shirt off your back too.. ;D...you get to heaven .. ;)
Aww very cute.is it a baby blackbird?
Is it a house martin?
What a lovely thing to do! :)
Oops I forgot that bit, yes a House Martin.
He's been in his make shift nest for 4 days now. I've no idea how long before he can fly, I hope it is soon.
Jayb, do you have some vanish to wash your top in ;) ;D ;D ;D.
Fantastic! What a girl! Well done you :) :)
I thought I'd give a little update. The evening before last I found Martin on the ground. I kept an eye on him for a while. He didn't seem to be doing much and I decided it safest to pop him back in his make shift nest.
This is a photo of him yesterday morning sitting on a low wall not far his nest.

Just as I was saying to him it wouldn't be long his flying was improving and he had made it to the wall, he took off. Barely skimming above the ground at first and then all of a sudden he began to climb in the sky. By the chatter going on it seemed one parent was closely following him. I lost sight of them as they went behind some tall trees.
I'm sooooooooooooo glad I saw him go, I was dreading an empty nest and not knowing.
So lovely of you to share that Jayb - and great photo too.
Aaaaah! What a lovely story to read on a wet & miserable day, so glad you were able to help him.
Thank you for your kindness and thank you for letting us share. How lovely! I am glad you saw him fly off. :) AHHHH
Just wonderful Jayb. Your words brought a lump to my throat, but a happy one ;D.

Gorgeous photos and a delightful story - I do love a happy ending! Thanks for sharing! x
yes a happy ending, and greta photos ;D Does this mean you are now an "empty nester" :P
Read the first post and have just got round to reading the last one. How lovely. Its good when we can give nature a helping hand
I rescued a swallow which had flown into a big glass window and was stunned a couple of years ago.
It is such an honor to be able to help these lovely birds, and so rare to get so close to them :)
Sooooo nice to hear a happy story :)
Baby birds falling out of nests sadly usually don't make it :'( Martin had a lucky break! He did look quite big in the first picture so I guess it was almost the end of his time in the nest anyway! Wonderful photos!
Wonderful story and such a happy ending, he was lucky to be rescued by such a kind soul as you.
How lovely that he survived.
A few years back we had a house martin's nest that disintegrated. All the birds came tumbling to the ground and most survived. I found a small bucket in the shed that had been used as a plant pot and filled it three quarters full with screwed up kitchen roll. I recovered the lining to the nest, placed it on top and then tied the bucket to the bathroom window just a short distance from the original nest. After replacing the baby birds in their new nest, I was relieved to see that their parents started to feed them again. They all successfully fledged. Here are some pics.

Yes it is lovely to be able to help out. ;D sounds like A4A is full of fledgling savers!
Pauline I love the bucket idea, I'll save that idea for the future. It was lucky Martin was well advanced, and I'm not sure how long he would have lasted sitting on the patio.
I did find a crashed nest a couple of years ago, again House Martins. I found the little fledgelings almost dead with cold, no sign of parents. Following advice from a nearby rescue centre I took the little chicks to them, where they were looked after and then released. They said HM nests quite often come down when a period of rain follows a dry time.
Wonderful pics Pauline :)
