Title: Water Melon
Post by: themauler on July 10, 2011, 00:55:36
I have grown 8 Melon plants from seed, 4 Sugar Baby & 4 Crimson Sweet. The plants are 8" to 10" and seem strong but tend to drop to one side. They are in pots about 18"-20" and in a greenhouse.
Should I leave them to grow as they are, or train them up a trellis, frame or canes.

Unless you have room to let them trail along the floor(a bit wasteful on space) then they certainly do need support and more substantial support than canes.

Even smallish ones like sugar baby can get to a couple of kg.

PS-regards to Mirfield,my partner from many years back(and we are still friends) has her allotment there-yes it got flooded

I grow mine up twine in the greenhouse. Take up less room but I have to make a home made bra to hold the weight.

Well I'd like to think my melons will fill a good size bra!!!
If I can't find anyone to give up their bras, then I will have to make some.

Regarding cleo's former partner, it sounds like the same allotment as mine, right next to the river. Apparantly it flooded a few years ago but this is my first year so I've yet to experiance it.
