hi, are there any onion types i can sow now? seeds or sets,i have lifted all my winter onions which i set in October last year and need to get some more going. cheers rick :)
Maybe something like http://www.dobies.co.uk/Shop/Vegetable+Seeds/Onion+(Spring)+Lilia+seeds+437651.htm
Dual purpose onions that can be picked a "spring" onions but will bulb up if left in for a while. I think it would be too late for anything else.
to add to previous post..it is soon time to start winter onions if you are going to grow them from seeds...
The next planting is late september, plant overwintering japanese onions..... I would get the bed dug and manured, and weeded, wait for the next wave of weeds, then sheet it with black plastic which will kill all the weedlings once and for all, until you're ready to plant it up.
I have long red florence in old meat containers from seed, about 3" tall, I've just sowed ailsa craig onion seed, these will all overwinter. Our overwintered long red florence are huge this year, just waiting for them to fall over now :)

Problem is if you plant them too early there likely to bolt first thing next spring, if you plant them too late the frosts get them........................
must've got it right, makes a change , they withstood all the cold. All our overwintering reds bolted, some of our whites did,all the onions and garlic got white rot on the new plot but these long reds are great ;D
There you go ;D
seedlings are looking really good, will be planted in september when the peas and green manure are out :)
