Title: cookies, and can I delete them all.
Post by: queenbee on July 01, 2011, 21:14:41
I have recently had trouble getting on to genens reunited where I am doing my family tree. They say that my e mail address is not correct. I have contacted genes several times, and they have suggested getting rid of my history and deleting from favourates which did not work, they have now suggested that I delete my cookies as I may have a corrupted one. Please advise if this is too drastic an action. Can I safely delete them and then re-sign into my favourate sites. Genes is the only one that will not recognise my e-mail address. Help !!!!

I delete my cookies and temp internet files every day just before I log off my Pc....its not a problem unless you are one of these people who dont like to type in passwords all the time.

It's not an issue to delete your cookies - in fact cookies do not store your passwords - they are stored in an encrypted file somewhere.
I had to advise one of our subscribers to do a similar thing recently - its a bit of a pain but sometimes needed.
You can, if you like, just delete the cookie(s) from gr..
If you are on Win 7 just type shell:cookies in the run dialouge - this opens the cookie folder - just delete anything related to genes reunited and restart your browser.

i dont post on here much as i dont know much about growing! only just started recently ... but i do know about computers.

The best thing you can do is download the following ...

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

dont purchase the premium support as its not required, the product is actally free ... towards the bottom of the screen you'll see the link that says 'download from piriform.com'

Download it, install it and run it daily ... it cleans your computer of all temporary files!!!

I use it every day at the office on over 150 computers!

Wise advice by BW (for Windows users). I left Windows some years ago because of all the hassle with error messages, I moved to an OS which is properly written to do it's own housework in removing temp files and cookies. It doesn't keep putting up error messages either, it just works.

Actually it is pretty much a waste of time to run ccleaner every day unless your PCs are old and under resourced or are experiencing issues..  Also deleting cookies and temp internet files doesnt really speed your PC up either - you should only delete them if you have issues with the internet or certain websites.

Larkhall - I have no idea what you are banging on about with Windows error messages and I am pretty sure that Linux doesnt remove your cookies unless you specifically ask it to - cookies are controlled and used by browsers and in linux they are in the browser folder rather than a system folder.  Cookies are actually quite useful - if you dont like them then you can actually turn them off - Yes in Windows!!!  You really should look at some recent versions of Windows - you seem to be basing your opinions on historical data..  ;)
