ASAP, i think is the answer ruud. Traditionally, onions have been sown on Boxing Day to get as much growing time in. Suggest you sow the seeds in trays of compost now. My seed packet said to sow late December/early January.

Ruud,

I have good results from sowing on top of moistened compost 1" apart, and well covered with vermiculite.

At 18 degrees C they were through in 7 days

Don't let the compost get too wet, Bordeaux mixture will help prevent damping off.

The advice I have read is to leave them in the seed compost until there is more than one leaf, this means they will have at least 3 roots and transplant much better.
