I need a day out other than the plot and as we are surrounded by water, lakes, rivers and sea so we are going crab fishing tomorrow..just off to buy crab traps today and bait.
The pier we are going off is on an inlet in a park so super picnic, etc etc or maybe a BBQ while there.. I am looking forward to tomorrow.
Wish us luck we aint done this for a few years

am envious I love crab but never eat it cos hub dont like it, and seems a waste to buy a whole one and have to throw it away
that sounds lovely. You'll be having a clam bake next, whatever that is. We only ever had some cockles in a polystyrene cup with a little plastic fork.
Actually for all i know that was banned years ago (probably a good thing too)
We have done oodles of clambakes when we were Washington voluteers in the State Parks.
We cannot get clams here anymore as the polution is high but if we cross the US border back to Washington we can.
Cockles by the way here are a much bigger type than the UK ones, about 4 inches is average, they live just beneath the surface of the sand so we rake for them with a garden fork
We used to have a holiday place over there ane spent every weekend digging for clams, picking crabs and oysters.
Susan, my husband doesn't eat shellfish either, he is great at digging and catching though. I buy crab for myself and it never ever gets wasted. Go for it!!

Enjoy your day. I love crab. ;D
Well, forgive me if i offend anyone, but this must be the first time ever, that i've seen a post on a gardening forum, from someone, a lady no less, who is actively looking to catch crabs, ;)
Ah shucks, I always wanted to be called a lady.
I can buy fresh live crab here and I do all the time but I find when sitting in a tank they lose weight.Lasdt week I bought a 3 1/2 pound lobster and the blooming thing was empty, so we have decided to go back to catching our own, crabs that is..
We just got 2 crab traps, folding chairs, new small cooler and a great big umbrella and picnic food is in the process. Can't have a bottle of wine though it isn't allowed in a park here.
So off to buiy fish heads then I am all ready.
I will try to get some pictures as it is quite fascinating.

Did you catch any crabs Jeannine? Any pics?
No, we couldn't get the salmon heads but we got some yesterday and put them in the freezer, so next week we will go. I will get pictures for you all.

I love crab Remember having Crab Creole in California superb. Possible best meal I have ever had.
I am sure that waiting a week you will enjoy it even more in the end.
Don't buy a load of stuff to catch crabs, just find an old bicycle wheel ! ::) Cheers, Tony.
We don't like the bike wheel type of trap as we want to put it down and leave it.I love to see the folks with them though but very often the seals pinch the bait if it fish which I prefer to chicken, commercial pellets or canned foods,so we are using trap door types.
