I agree with Chas, all the supermarkets should sell them. Sometimes I've known it to be out of stock in some due to seasonal stocking, but you should be able to get it.

Just make sure it is vinegar, and not 'non-brewed condiment'.  Which is acetic acid, and has nothing to do with vinegar.

Currently Tesco have Oak Lane malt vinegar at 29p a pint and Tesco own brand white distilled malt vinegar at 44p a pint. Both these are suitable for use when pickling, the acidity levels are fine.

Thanks folks. Will have to pluck up the courage to go  to one o them supermarkets. Me and Tone don't like these big shops. ..Don't get me wrong, we are not a couple of old dodderers. We just get a horrid feeling when we go into these places. Wilkies is about my limit and some of their stores are getting bigger. ;D

I always thought there was a difference between pickling vinegar and malt vinegar. I could be wrong, but I know when I was a little girl mum and dad used to use 'Sarsons' malt vinegar (the ordinary brown stuff) and added pickling spices to the jar. They would pickle all sorts, onions, red cabbage etc in this way. It always tasted good and was always crispy. The only down side was that you had to dig the little spices out of the red cabbage!   :)

I must admit they did end up using pickling vinegar which I just assumed was the malt vinegar with the pickling spices added in some way, but so you didn't end up with the little spices floating about. I always thought it was a new thing out (that would've been many years ago now!) but it could've been because we moved from Norfolk to Kent and they had more variety in the big towns.

If you really can't face going to a big supermarket, perhaps the local village shop will still do the pickling spices to add to the malt vinegar. As I say everything really turned out well and the only drawback is the spices have to be picked out of things like the red cabbage.
