Title: a rather silly question about companion plants for onions but her goes.....
Post by: cambourne7 on June 24, 2011, 18:15:17
Hi All,

Brain is a little swiss cheese today so i have a rather stupid question :)

I was looking for things i can plant with my onion sets i have planted these quite close together because A) i am an idiot and B) i was not so confident with the viability of the sets so am expecting quite a lot of failures.

Ideally i don't want herbs as these are in the herb bed and brassicas (with marigolds) are in the next bed was thinking something like the poached egg plant but not sure if they are going to help the situation :)

pearls of wisdom or new brain all welcome :)

Cam

Your brain seem to work fine.. ;) ;D
Poach egg plant is ok with onions..and if they start to go bit unruly..they are easy to weed out and add to compost.

There is plenty of time for them to flower and self seed for next year too..
They are really quick growers.

I must admit that it seems late for onion sets, but hey! you might benefit from a possible long autumn!

It is very late, and being close together you can get some nice spring onions, check other thread by Lillian about spring onion sets.   ;D

Might just harvest the lot and make a batch of french onion soup small and flavourful :)

Someone also mentioned it might hybridise the onions to my soil for larger onions next year but will defiantly check out the spring onion thread :)
