I'm growing 9 * perennial broccoli for the 1st time and was wondering about how tall it grows - need to plan some netting!
Thanks :)
can't help as I've only managed to get 3 to germinate this year and just planted them out, looking forward to the answer :)
They can grow up to a metre (over 3 ft) in my experience. They can last for several years but get really ragged and messy after the first - as well as taking up a lot of space the whole year round.
thanks for the info, I know now a bit more about what to expect :)
manics - mine weren't the best germinators, better than your's but not great. Anyway, we should have enough to find out if they are worth it!
They can get over 4' in subsequent years.. so we treat them as a one year crop... :-\
I got OK germination with mine, and it was old seed. I replace them every 2-3 years, but they were wiped out last winter so I'm starting again.
A clever no-no. Tried, tested & tipped.
Comparatively unproductive (?) & what about rotation??
We grew it one year but for the amount of heads we got from it and the straggly growth it made the following year we decided to get rid of it.
They are very productive plants Tim... especially in the second "year" and like most perennials seem to be tolerant of problems. I rotate them as brassicas but if growing for several years would put in the "perennial" bed with the asparagus and so on, ..... :-\
Oops and damnation. I have wanted to grow this one for years and for some daft reason I always forget to start it off. I've done it again this year. Do I still have time to sow some please.
I guess I will have to pin the blooming seed packet on the fridge for next year along with the strawberries I keep meaning to sow.

And Jeannine - ain't that just the way ::)
You're a little late, but I imagine you'll get away with it.
Thanls Robert, I will do them today, Which would be best this late, in pots inside or direct and thinned?

I always start brassicas in pots, but it doesn't suit eveyone.
Thank you, I do too actually but wondered being this late if I might be better goiung direct.. I have never done it before.. think I will stay with the pots...TODAY
