Am I to late to sow them now?
I sowed some 'Harrier' very late June last year that went in after my first early spuds had come out.
There was not enough time for all the fruit to fully ripen, but some did and others not far off so I would say go ahead, but choose a quick maturing variety.
It depends on the variety and the weather conditions f0r the rest of the year.
Mine are already out doors with the courgettes marrows etc. They are not doing as well as the marrows.
Butternuts are not a natural plant for the UK.
Our summers are too cool. There are varieties which will manage our climate, so if you have sown them and if the UK weather is kind you will get a crop.
They take up a lot of space. You should decide for 2012. Is It worth it? For 2011, you are making a test.
A lovely fruit, used as a veg. Which keeps over winter better than spuds.

They are one of my favourite veg - lovely in soups or roasted. Mixed results so far, last year was pretty good. I'd say worth a go

Dave, you still have time if you are quick.. but be careful which ones you buy. Avoid the old Waltham butternuts and stick to the Hunter, Harrier or Hawk series, they are designed for the UK short season and are an open bushy type.. if you have a decent season you should be OK with those about 95-105 days depending on which one you can get.

I transplanted my Walchern B/S outside today and will be transplanting my Harrier in the next 2 weeks.
Sow some seeds under glass on the off chance.
I planted out 3 BNS 2 weeks ago and 6 more on Saturday, they grew very well for me the last 2 years, we ate the last one of the 2010 crop a few weeks ago!

I have tried them outside several times and got 0 fruit no matter how early i started them off.
Had better results under glass though - but if your location is really sheltered you might be ok growing outside.
i sowed some in pots 2 weeks ago and they are yet to germinate ?
any advice welcome !!

Well either wait or plant again. My BNS were really slow to germ this year and some other squash I had given up on germed really late so it may be they are OK. Bung in a few more if you have the seeds although it is getting late!
