Title: Little Bit Advice?
Post by: hightower on June 06, 2011, 11:18:08
Went out to the cold frame yesterday and some of my herbs had turned yellow and died, but the weird thing was they felt moist to the touch. I lost some cress, and a few herbs like dill. Also, my peas are in the cold frame in pots (1 pea per pot) and they have yellow parts on the leaves.

Is this something simple like overwatering, or something a bit harder to diagnose? I try to leave the cold frame door open on days like today where the weather is nice.

hmm yes, could be damping off, maybe they dont like it in the cold frame now the weathers nicer, ive had to remove some of my cucumbers from the greenhouse recently for the same reason

Quotefelt moist to the touch.

My guess is they have wet feet!

Many herbs originate from the mediterranian area and as such are grown quite dry.

Do a weight test before watering!

If the pot is lightweight then water,  if it is heavy give watering a miss.

Then if you have bought compost like I have; you may find it seems to be dry on top yet it is quite sodden.

Short of removing the rootball from every  pot  to check I find that  the 'weight' test is usually pretty accurate!

I will hold back on watering, and also get my peas out in the garden - the only reason they are still in the cold frame is because I have no spare pots and the dog keeps knocking the little pots over. Time to invest in another grow bag I think!

We grow our peas and herbs in hanging baskets. Saves the dogs assisting in the watering of our edible plants  ;)
