Is it to late to plant peas for a late crop??
They haven't done very well so far
Think you can just about get away with a sowing now but the only trouble is that with a late sowing they seem to get mildew

yes they get mildew in the Autumn... No need to start them in the greenhouse put them straight into the ground, What i do this time of year with it being so dry is to make a drill about a couple of inches deep then water the drill before sowing the seed .
With autumns being long and mild, I have been sowing into August with many veggies and getting great results harvesting into early winter. I have peas just through and have more to go in.
Thanks thought they.would germinate.quicker.but will get them soaked for a few hours n get.them.in
Mangetout are a better bet as the season goes on... :)
I'm extremely wary of direct sowing due to pigeons. They seem to get worse every year.

I put some in a length of guttering today and put that in my strwaberry patch which I have covered in netting. By the time the strawberries are finninshed I can put the netting over the peas when I put them in...
Plant Kelvedon Wondon (Dr Hessayon) upto end June. These have worked for me as long as you water them every week. Here in Norfolk it's a bit of a dustbowl this year.
I've got first lot of peas nearly ready for hanging up for drying (early bucket crop) and I'm planning to sow yet another lot straight away..but this time 'normal' shorter sort..those should have plenty of time for cropping. Our growing season is only just started..well in theory it is.. ::)
BTW..does peas need 'resting'/drying out period for them to germinate or can fresh but fully mature peas be used for sowing straight from 'wrinkly' pods? I'm just thinking to maximise my seed production and maybe do same lot again? :-\
'resting'/drying out period = dormant period.. I was looking for the right word and it took for a minute to come to my head.. ::) It sunday and my head is resting.. ;) ;D
Gosh I wouldn't have thought of re-sowing peas at this time of year! I am only harvesting now. It's quite dry here in summer, won't that be a problem?

Cropping my 'Twinkle' peas now and have just sowed more, this weekend, hopefully for a late crop.
Currently cropping Twinkle adn Meteor, had pigeon problems on my KW adn Hurst GS...resowed some HGS a couple of weeks ago in strip-modules, they'll go where the early carrots are coming out now in a few days time.... actually they can go where the garlic tha tgot proper mugged by white rot has come out from too....

Any of those should be fine if you grow for eating..as for seed saving ..first two should be fine..alderman taking much longer for maturity.. :-\ ..should do.. ;)
We usually grow Ambassador. They are mildew proof. They never get as far as the plate cos we always eat them at the plot

Thanks - it will be for eating. Actually to save seed, I usually just leave on the plant any pods that I have been too slow in gathering and that are already over matured. I let them get bigger till they dry out. I generally take them away when I dig up the plant over the summer.
Yes Alderman are a bit slow, my first Kelvedon are almost finished and the Alderman are just getting peas now! The pods are a lot bigger though.
