Title: Ants nest in greenhouse bed
Post by: Sparkly on May 31, 2011, 16:07:33
Will this matter? It is for tomatoes and cucumbers. Went to plant them out today and a massive Ant's nest. Obviously I know they like dry soil. Will it affect the plants?

Give the beds a real good soaking. You could even open up the nest and pour on boiling water. Ants don't like it wet.

I quite like ants, but they were undermining my salads with their tunnels and heavy breeding. I reluctantly bought some sort of ant killer (not the nastiest) and it worked, I was very surprised.

If they're red ants then I'd say leave them, they're a voracious predator of things you want dead.... if they're black ants then the best bet is the poison traps you get or make out of yogurt pots loaded with Nippon ant killer gel.... it's a sweet gel they take back to the nest and feed the queen... it's poisoned so she dies... end of nest.... reason for killing the black ants is their farming habits.... of aphids on your plants......
