Post by: debster on May 31, 2011, 15:05:42
hubby and i have been on healthy eating plans since jan with him losing over 3 stone and me 19lb we recently added some of the you are what you eat cook books to our repetoire and have thoroughly enjoyed the food some recipes have meat some are vegetarian and some are vegan and all are delicious (on a whole we use slimming world plan), does anyond know any really good recipe books, not worried whether they are vegan or vegetarian as long as they are healthy eating.
we have discovered a new world of pulses etc that we would like to explore further, still love our meat and fish but like to ring the changes too

I've got one book particularly that I like..Sarah Brown's healthy living cookbook..all vegetarian recipes, very easy to follow recipes,, nothing complicated..and it gives nutrition profile for every recipe if you need to break it down for calories, protein, fat..etc.
Lots of recipes for beans and pulses and the 'not so usual' ingredients that you can buy in some shops but often we 'here' are growing.. ;) There is dishes from different countries as well as every day foods but made in healthier way using alternative ingredients to meat and rich dairy...not to forget the deserts and puddings.. ;)
It is 'old' book now so I'm not sure if it is still in print..but best bet would be Amazon or EBay..

I swear by Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian, dishes from everywhere (Greece, caribbean, India, China etc), the recipes vary from simple to special (more complex), and do work, plus lots of lentil dishes

I also like Leith's Vegetarian Bible for ideas (tons of recipes and variations) and I've found Sopie Grigson's The Vegetable Bible: The Definitive Guide -  great for allotment food and ideas, less lentils but lots of fresh veggie ideas (not 100% veggie recipes).

I do dislike the titles though - can't they think of anything more imaginative  ::)

None are specific for dieting though  :-\.

We use those books, just watch out for the amount of Cheese in the recipes.

We are currently great fans of Yotam Ottolenghi, who writes "The New Vegetarian" column in the Saturday Guardian.  You can find his recipes here http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/series/thenewvegetarian

He's also published a couple of books.  "Plenty" is a beautiful book, with lots of inspiring recipes.

His website is http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk/

The Philadelphia cookbooks have some good healthy recipes in too as you can use extra light philly... we love this one....

My daughter is veggie and I am trying to diet and we have found some good recipes to suit both of us in there.  I will look out for 'Plenty'  Thanks  :)
