Title: Earwigs in my Pak Choi!
Post by: fitzsie on May 28, 2011, 13:34:39
I've been growing pak choi in my cloche very sucessfully but what is left has now started to acquire many holes and they've started to bolt. I also have lettuces and a few spring onions in there.  On pulling up the pak choi I noticed the cores contain many earwigs. I shook them out and our resident blackbird finished them off. I'm concerned that they are in the cloche and the lettuces will be next. Will this happen and what can I do to get rid of them prefereably in a friendly way rather then harsh chemicals.

earwigs aren't really a problem except that they're earwigs. With us it's tiny slugs hiding in the pak choi. Perhaps if you can uncover the cloche during the day, or keep hoeing round the plants may keep the bugs down. If you're growing the cos or crisphead type lettuce they won;t be a problem

pak choi is coming to an end now, unless you want just a few leaves. Sow them again at the end of the summer/autumn
