While shopping in the Oriental supermarket today I spied a seed rack.. so who cares if it was all in Japanese, they were seeds!!
Most said things like Tomata..with a red fruit shown..no variety names, well not in English anyway. The only English was a few brief growing instructions.,
Did I buy some..well of course I did, I ciuldn't help myself.
I only bought 2 though, the 2 I didn't recognise from the picture.
I have Asparagus lettuce , I think this is Celtuce.
The other one is called Chieh Qua ther net says it is a hairy melon .Instructions say start inMay, transplant in June and grow on a fence.
Has anyone grown either of them?
Oh eck, I have to stop this, we are off down Commercial Drive tomorrow to buy cheeses, it is the Italian area, goodness know what I might come home with.!!!

An Italian ;) ;D ;D ;D.
I was reading about Asparagus lettuce the other day in my Seeds of Kokopeli book, I'd never come across it before. I could dig out the info if you like?
Sounds like a fun way of buying new seeds ;D
ooooo Italian cheese, smoked mozzarella - YUM!
1066 :)
I grew Celtuce last year, they were easy to care for, looked lovely and really made an impressive looking stem. Alas not to my taste, I found both leaves and stem had a bitter back taste which I did not enjoy much. Not one I'll be growing again for myself, chooks and piggies enjoyed them and were not as fussy as me.
I think they are one and the same as Wax gourds or wax melons. Hairy melons being the younger more immature fruits, when they mature they are known as Wax gourd. I bought some wax melon seed (Thai small seeded from Baker Creek) to try this year, but haven't sown them yet as I don't think I'll have any room left. Sorry not much help to you.
Mmmm olives,
double yummm smoked mozzarella ;D
