Title: Berry identification
Post by: elhuerto on May 24, 2011, 20:51:01
I have a bush planted as bare root a couple of years ago which I'm sure was labeled here as a chokeberry. This year it's fruited for the first time and it doesn't look like any of the chokeberry images I've seen on the net. The fruit looks like a thin long sad looking blackberry. The bush is about 6 foot tall, smallish green leaves and deciduous. I'll take a couple of photos tomorrow if my vague description isn't clear. Any suggestions?

Chokeberry is like black currant berries but instead of dangling in 'strings' they are more of 'clump' form.
The bush itself is quite bare..not lush and leafy like black currants and leaves are smallish and roundish shape. Autumn colour is usually quite bright.
So yes..I think your description does match the bush..the berries are not large cherry like..like they look in nurseries photos.

Thanks, the bush description sounds spot on so that'll be it, it's not a particularly interesting looking bush or fruit so I may remove it in the Autumn.

What's the fruit like - is it a single berry like a blackcurrant, or is it an aggregate fruit (many merged bobbly bits) like a blackberry?

There are quite a number of shrubs with poisonous black berries, some deadly poisonous, so it's worth being pretty sure of the identification before you scoff too many.
