Title: Kale - too big for seedbed!!
Post by: antipodes on May 16, 2011, 10:15:12
I sowed some kale that has come up wonderfully well in the protected seed frame (thanks Goodlife!!). Trouble is that it is starting to burst through the top! And I usually plant these winter things following on to the early spuds, but I am out about 2 weeks in calculation it seems. Should I leave the kale where it is, or is it possible to  put it in a corner with more space then move it to a permanent spot a little later?
I sowed Brussels at the same time and they are doing well, but much smaller...
Also I thought the kale would take longer to grow - when will I be eating it, at this rate? At the end of summer? Expected it to be a winter dish...

Did I send you some of my 'monster kale' by accident.. ;) ;D Well, sounds like they are doing well..
I haven't sown mine yet..so perharps it was tad too early for your climate...but nothing wrong with that..
You could 'blonk it in' pot I suppose..untill your spuds have come up....you could even sink the pot in ground to stop it been knocked over by wind etc.  Then there is less root disturbance when you plant it in permanent spot..rather than keep digging it out of ground.
Nothing stops you having little nibble out of it..if it that eager to put growth on..but yes..generally it is eaten when there is little else about..you get more out it now..before, during and after winter.. ;D
You'll get sick of it after while.. ;D

Last year I sowed my kale in March, and was reaping kale from mid summer ish onwards.  It was a great crop, and lasted through until the bad December killed it all off!!  But I have noticed that I have a couple of kale plants that have self seeded in my, now, fruit bed so that's a couple off to a good start while this years seedlings are growing.

Oh Ok, well I guess I might as well just find some space for them then! Next to the tomatoes I suppose, they will have rich soil in any case! It's the first time that I am really struggling to find space! Many things are coming on quite early this year.
