While we're on the subject of black runner beans, has anyone grown this one? Mine are coming up slowly, but apart from Rebsie's page, which suggests that they're stringy, I don't really know anything about them. They didn't crop well for her, but she does say it was a bad year. I'm growing them mainly for dried beans rather than pods.
and did some bloke on skis jump out of a helicopter to give you them?
??? sorry that was Milk Tray. oops
Hi Robert, I must have missed the thread about black runner beans.
I seem to remember these from about 5 years ago, grew well but the beans themselves were dissapointing, I found them very stringy and in the end let them go to seed. As dried beans they were OK but I didn't grow them again
I found them similar to Black Knight which also make a good dry bean but they do OK as a runner if used young so if I grow a black it is usually this one.
It could be that the Black Magic may well be OK as a young bean too but I left them too long so didn't really try them. The Black Knight gets tough very quickly though I am growing it this year.
Not much help.
XX Jeannine.
It's something though! Thanks.
