Title: Ideas for first community event
Post by: ripley on May 14, 2011, 21:37:44
Hi

I am involved in a new community garden. We are planning a community event which should link in with a local food day. As this will be our first real introduction to the community I would love some ideas to encourage people to become involved especially children.

We were looking at things such as bags of veg for soups and potato hair men. But any ideas you guys can suggest will be great. I have a big allotment of my own which I love and I want to spend time with people who enjoy thr garden too!!

So ideas please and thank you for reading this

Hi
I find that getting them to do something is key

Slug races, sowing a courgette/sunlower etc, wellie throwing, Some kind of quiz with both fun and serious questions, maybe even somekind of gardeners question time- this can bring in people with problems in their gardens (have some questions ready to get this going) - ask the local radio to announce your day.

If you can find something cheap of get local busnesses to donate things you could have a plant swap where folks bring something from thier garden and recieve something in return? You never know what you might get.

Good luck with  your day

Yes I was thinking a plant swap, or seed fair.
At the last local event, our allotment association sold plates of raw veg to nibble on - radish, carrots, etc but I am not sure it all came from our allotments! I think not.
What about a bit of an environmental lean, like an exposé on composting or mulching?? Natural gardening?

What about sowing some pots of loose salad leaves and cress which people can buy for a small cost.
I have a thing about these bags of lettuce leaves and try to encourage people to grow their own, by showing what you can do in just a plant pot! :)

Thank you so much for  your ideas. I will put them all down ready for the next meeting.

It,s really exciting being involved in something from the start and the area to be used is huge with platformed teaching areas etc planned.

Any other ideas would be great thanks Ripley

That salad ideas a great one, you can sow lots of it in fish boxes and maybe use it as your swap as mixed salad leaves for lucnches as well as sow in small pots to sell or swap.

Noticed that wilkos big bags of mixed salad leaves seed are on sale 49p so nows a good time to buy and sow and it does very fast coverage for those bare spots.

Just had our meeting to discuse ideas everyone had!

It went really well lots of enthusiasm- now the hard work who will do what.

We are going to dig some of the comfrey up which is wild all over the plot. Either give it away with details of how to grow and use it or sell it for funds. Also strawberry kebabs!

Thanks for the ideas and I,ll keep you updated
