Title: suppliers of dwarf fruit trees
Post by: Kevins299 on January 23, 2005, 19:21:37
our allotment does not allow large fruit trees. so in order to have some fruit we want to get some dwarf stock or step overs. who are good suppliers ? also which variety of apples pears and apricots are best as dwarf stock.

Ken Muir is always worth a look, there is also lots of adice on the site:

Also look at RV Rogers in Pickering, very good selection at good prices, have used them over a few years:

Not used Jane Lane but their prices look very good:

Blackmoor also have a very goo reputation:

The choice of variety is a huge question, are you looking for culinary or eating fruit?

I believe that the dwarfer the stock the longer it takes for the tree to reach fruit bearing age. So you need a vigorous grower - but as it is a long term investment you need a variety you like to eat!

There's lots of top fruit suppliers listed at www.plant-seed-mailorder.org.uk (http://www.plant-seed-mailorder.org.uk) - if there isn't one near you then Blackmoor and Deacon's are very helpful.

I've just had my fruit bushes and a Worcester Pearmain delivered from Buckingham Nurseries (http://www.hedging.co.uk/) - great service, and exceedingly well packed!  I'm going to espalier train the apple tree.

I had a look at these links too -very useful to me also. But I'd like to ask if the usual type of tree supplied - ie a 1year old maiden will be OK to train to a stepover. Is this easy to do or would I be better to buy one already trained. I did look on the Ken Muir site but their stepovers are £26 + !
That says to me that it is would not easy to train them myself!
Any thoughts anyone? :-\
