Title: Triangle the feral kitten is dead
Post by: Squash64 on May 11, 2011, 14:20:26
She had been missing for two days and Shirl found her this morning in a pile of logs near her plot.  She looked as though she was sleeping but was obviously dead.

We immediately suspected poisoning and I phoned our lovely Cats Protection lady who came over straight away.  She took her to the vet and the post-mortem showed that it was a road traffic accident.

I can't begin to tell you how upset Shirl and I are.  Triangle was my favourite cat, the one that I found in the cage with Felix last year.

[attachment=1]

She was the first of our ferals to let me stroke her, and the only one I was able to pick up.

[attachment=2]

She never showed any sign of aggression and would purr away happily while I held her.

[attachment=3]

I know she had a good life for the short time she was with us, but it wasn't long enough.

She didn't come for her food yesterday morning, which was the day after Scarecrow Smith was mugged.  It's hard not to put two and two together but we can't help but wonder if the children had anything to do with her running out onto the road.  She never went near the fence which is nearest the road, but she might have done if she was being chased....

Jenny, our CP lady was marvellous.  She picked Triangle up and wrapped her in towels and took her to the vet.  She was in tears too.  She phoned me to tell me the result, still in tears, and asked if we would like her to be buried in her own garden.
I said that we would, so she phoned me back a few minutes ago to say that it had been done.  She also said that our vet would not be charging for the PM.

I've had so many hugs from people at the allotments this morning.  I know many people will say "It's only a cat"  but I can't help feeling so upset about her.

So sorry to hear that, it is horrible knowing that she was in a RTA and at least you had found her nothing is worse than never knowing. the lovely thing is that she had a loving home with both of you and Shirl and hopefully Felix will not feel her loss too much.

Ahh..sorry to hear that..
But I'm amazed how wonderful animal 'professionals' you have there...vet who doesn't charge for their services..'your' CP lady who doesn't wait until 'tommorrow'..they all seem to be very eager to help you without delay...really lovely.
But you and your 'kittens' deserve all the attention.. ;)

I'm so sorry to hear this Betty and Shirl, I'm not surprised you are in tears, lossing a pet is horrid, and you'd become so very found of these kittens.

Big hugs all round (including the lovely lady from the CPS) x

Very sorry to hear this, Triangle of all the moggies.  It is no consolation that she wasn't poisoned but had an accident.  You will miss her.  You gave her a good life and she trusted you.  First the scarecrows and now Triangle.  Not a good couple of days.  Big hug to you and Shirl.

Be glad you gave her some lovely times.

So, so sorry about your lovely cat, but as others have said you gave her a good and happy life with lots of loving.  Its amazing how quickly one gets fond of animals, and how much it hurts when you loose them  :'(

Thinking of you
Sue

I am so sorry to hear o your loss of Triangle the cat. The short life she had with both of you was full of love. She made her way back to you after the accident which proves she knew where her home was. Sending you both a hug and healing thoughts. Its true what they say "cats leave paw prints in our hearts"> God bless to you both and the vet and the lady at Cats Protection.

Today has not been a good day. When I found her I just wanted to take her away so that I wouldn't have to tell Betty. It was Betty who looked after her along with the other cats. I live to far away to be there for them every day like she is. Even if I was able to help I could never be as devoted as Betty and her friend Ken who came every afternoon to feed them.
None of the cats ever come down to where our plot is so I am sure that she must have been chased. I am wondering if the 2 canes we found on the grass by our plot have anything to do with it.Whatever the cause I know that she will leave a great big hole in Betty's life that will be very hard to fill.

I'm so sorry that you are having a sad time again, first the Pavilion then Scarecrow Smith, now Triangle.
I hope that is the third and last bad thing to happen and that life on your wonderful site gets back to how it should be.
Love from Anne x

Thank you so much for your kind messages.

It was very sad when I went to feed the cats this morning.  Little Janet came out on her own, she always came with Triangle before.  She let me stroke her for quite a time, almost as though she was making up for not having Triangle to play with any more.

Our Cats Protection lady came to see how we were.  She is so kind and just the sort of person you need when you are in trouble.

Oh poor puss! Sorry to hear that - I heard on the radio the other day that the average life span of an urban cat, that is allowed outside, in a built up area is only about 4 or 5 years. Sadly they are very often killed in traffic. Our beautiful cat was killed last year by a hit and run driver, she was an indoors cat and not always outside so not so used to traffic. It's heartbreaking, so I do feel for you.

Hope the other cats give you some extra purrs to cheer you up.

You are right Ten, our CP lady really is a star.  Nothing is too much trouble for her.  She is a really busy person but always has time for us and the cats.  She is having a stall at our Plant Sale tomorrow and selling her home-made jams and preserves.  She is giving us half her takings and half to the CP.

If I ever have a cat of my own it would have to be an indoor cat.  I would worry so much that it might get run over if it went out. I'm really sorry about your cat Antipodes, I can understand how you must have felt.

I don't think Felix is missing Triangle at all, he is quite an independent cat, but poor little Janet is.  This morning she came to me and I stroked her for ages.  I have started putting my hands underneath her and lifting her an inch or two off the ground and she doesn't mind at all.  This is a big breakthrough because she has always been so timid and would not go near anyone.  She used to play with Triangle and they were really nice with each other.  Poor little thing is on her own now.
Sinbad, I still feel really sad every time I think of her.  I blame myself for her getting killed because if I'd stopped children from going all over the site it might not have happened.  I've put notices up all over the site now, even in the mens' toilet in front of them while they wee!

I'm so sorry to hear this - it's always upsetting when a dear animal dies - even worse if it shouldn't have happened.

I hope your cat's protection lady makes lots of money on her stall tomorrow.

Good luck with it - I only wish I wasn't so far away (pz a bit far for a day trip).

Sounds like all the cats in your neighbourhood have heard how good it is on your plot, so I wouldnt be surprised if you have another little squatter turn up soon  ;)

Sorry to be a dissenting voice but this makes my blood boil. You're suggesting blame on children who may or may not have been there, suggesting poisoning when it turns out to be a traffic accident. Accept it as a tragic accident, there's no need for it to be anything more

The two chldren were there on Monday afternoon and Ken saw them teasing the cats at the pavilion.  When he told them to stop they said that the cat had scratched their dad (impossible because the cats won't go to strangers) so it was alright to tease them.  They were seen running around with bamboo canes which were later found near the fence.   When we first had Felix and he had to stay in a cage for a couple of weeks Ken found them poking sticks through the bars of the cage.  I do suspect it's these two boys but I can't prove it. We never saw Triangle alive after Monday afternoon.

You may be thinking that I am some bitter old woman who hates all children.  Wrong!  I actually like the two boys and spend time with them, talking and getting things for them to do.  They behave perfectly for me, but they are out of their dad's control and he shows no interest in what they are doing.  I have warned him in the past about how dangerous it is for them to be running around with sticks, but he doesn't do anything about it.

As for the poisoning, only a few days ago a plotholder complained to Ken that the cats were pulling up his leeks. He hadn't seen them doing it but he "knew" it was them.  This man in the past has discussed with me various ways of poisoning squirrels so I know he is capable of doing something like that.

I have a plot at Walsall Rd just by where Triangle was found. The cats never venture down there. They are far too timid.The bamboo sticks had been thrown on the ground nearby.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion.
