Title: Lots of peaches
Post by: adrianhumph on May 11, 2011, 09:19:40
Hi all, :D
Presumably due to the mild weather, my 4 year old peach tree has over 100 small fruits on it,  ;D  Usually I am lucky if I get 6, Do I need to thin some of these out? or will they drop naturally as apples do?
                                                     Adrian.

my book says to thin to every 8", I think. Some of ours dropped off last year as it was covered with them, I haven't hand pollinated this year but have a good lot of fruit, I think I'll see how it goes for a while before taking any off  :)

At least make sure there's enough room for each fruit to develop. They're usually all on top of each other & will struggle to grow & ripen properly.

I always thin mine or I just end up with loads of worthless to eat tiny things.
I thin mine so that there is 2-3" between developing fruits. That means that I propably end up taking 2/3 of the fruit off!..you have to be cruel to be kind..

Well last year (Year 2 of tree) we got 12 perfect peaches from our tree. This year it is over full and the leaves are smitten with 'the curl' despite spraying.

Not a clue what to do, most trees naturally shed fruit they can not support. I fear to nip off fruits

Goodlife's right, you have to be cruel to be kind. If you don't take some of them off you won't get a decent harvest. Best to knock off some now than lose the lot. Steel yourself & go for it. Just keep thinking of last year's perfect ones.  ;D

Not sure what to do about the curl though. The only trees i've dealt with were indoors so it wasn't a problem.

I think yours are further on than ours, what variety are they?

what variety are they?..absolutely no idea. It was a order that went 'wrong'  ::)
I ordered nectarine..I got peach..but you don't know until its grown for couple of years.
In this case it was very happy mistake..the fruit is very early..its always ready by end of June..just before other fruits start coming so timing is perfect. Flesh is white and it driblingly juicy.. ;D ;D
