Hi All,
I just wondered if given the increasing cost of food was anyone growing more of something or extra things they dont normally grown because of that that?
Cam
Only difference to my growing is/was that I tried grow some wheat..but..birds had my seeds so my gemination for this year was so sparce that it wasn't worth of effort.
Well I'm going to have another go late autumn and hopefully next year I'll be baking bread made with own grown wheat/flour.. ;D
Basicly the price of decent bread is getting high..and all 'big brand' breads are just airy sponge stuff that cannot be even called as bread.
Yes.......... am growing my own raspberries for the first time, they are so expensive !!
I'm growing more potatoes than I used to. Enough to last over winter instead of just earlies for the summer. I don't have resources to process wheat although its easy to grow and I make all my own bread. More tomato plants because drying them last year was such a success. as much as possible over winter because drought is becoming such a summer issue over here in the east. Keeping something on the table all year round is the aim but producing high protein food except for beans is pretty hard without hens at least. Have been there, goats pigs etc but too old for all that now ;D
We took on another, small plot in november, we're trying to grow for all the family, times are hard for some of them :)
This year I have put more emphasis into successional sowing. My plot does not look full but there is loads in it all the same. I sow my next successional seed as soon as the plug plants are in the ground. I have many varieties of seed to ensure I get crops of most veg nearly all year round where feasible.
Yes im growing less potatoes this year as I can buy lovely organic spuds cheaply from nearby farm. Also not growing any onions, cabbages or carrots for the same reason.
Growing more leeks as they cost so much to buy, alot more winter squash so I have plenty to see me through the winter & lots of fruit like raspberries, blueberries & strawberries as organic packs of these always seem to be expensive. Im really going to concentrate next year on growing the items that cost me the most to buy ;)
Oh this is really interesting. I am also growing more salad, onions, squash and pumpkins as well as more winter veg like sprouts and cabbage. I am also growing spuds despite saying i was not going to :) I have also given my fruit bushes from the allotment a little bit more care and will try and remember to net them before the pigeons get to them again this year.
Not having my allotment last year i have really noticed the price of veg going up and in some cases the quality going down. I suppose its easier for me knowing my little one (at the moment) will only eat food out of a jar so i dont have to be 2 worry about buying organic if i cant afford it but i do miss my own veg.
