Only in it's 2nd year, my Aldi Cherry tree has quite a few fruits coming. Last year there were a very few of course, and as I walked away after admiring them, the birds ate them-every last one ::)
I have looked at various kinds of netting people are using on the allotments, (mine is in the garden at home) but I worry the birds may get caught up in it. At the mo I have decorated it with silver foil strips and twirly windmills- it looks like a Christmas tree. I'm sure there must be a better (looking) way. Any suggestions please? What do you use?
i wish your cherry tree lots of fruiting
like greengages a special fruit to grow
i have little problems from birds with a large cherry tree on an allotment plot
have a wild cherry in the garden and unfortunately had to dig up another cherry for reasons of leaf curl disease
it does seem that the garden cherries are more susceptible to birds ;possibly the open space of an allotment has problems with pigeons but not blackbirds and thrushes
a neighbour on the allotment has 2 cherries smothered in netting
i would be surprised that birds would be foolish enough to get trapped
perhaps your decision is where to get netting cheaply it is usually a little over 1 cm not quite half inch mesh
I use a mosquito net bought from Lidl a couple of years ago. It is the type you hang from the ceiling. It is very long and more than sufficient to cover my tree which is about 8 ft high. I need a ladder to drape the netting over the tree and use plastic clips to keep the opening securely closed and bricks to anchor it to the ground and to prevent birds getting in. Mosquito nets are probably available in good sporting goods shops.
