Title: Does anyone grow okra and is a good crop and delicious?
Post by: darkbrowneggs on May 07, 2011, 19:11:42
Hi - I have often thought about growing okra, but although I enjoy it when I go to a curry place it hasn't struck be as something truly delicious, such as fresh peas or asparagus.

Has anyone here grown it , and when it is fresh is it really good

Also what sort of crop would one get from say 6 plants??

All the best
Sue

i;m sure there's a monster thread on here called The Okra Challenge. I think the consensus was it's really hard to grow and it's nasty to eat...sure one of the masochists will put you right on the subject

Great  :) :)  That's the sort of info I need - growing veg is hard enough without "pratting" (hope that word is allowed - but then, I did have neighbours who were genuinely - and accurately - called Pratts)  around with something that really isnt worth the effort.

Thanks for that.  I shall now post another query on Aspargus Peas - which I grew once and thought were rubbish, then wondered if I hadn't grown or cooked them properly

Many thanks
Sue

Asparagus peas?-try cardboard-it`s so much better. As to okra-it`s delicious but I buy mine from an Asian store. I tried and I tried to grow it but some things are just not suited to an English Country Garden

How many pods of okra can you grow in an English Country Garden?

I can grow two and how do you do from an English Country Garden

I love okra! But I wouldn't expect to be able to grow it here. In fact where I live I wouldn't even expect to be able to buy it  ::)

Love okra, can't grow them for toffee though, almost as bad as my melon plants...... ::)

Okra and Melons - two things that are a pig to grow well - and when you succeed you will wake up from your fantasy and you will realise they are just as good from the greengrocer (actually okra is much better from Mr Green): Pointless effort.

Asparagus peas might be worth growing - or at least you can't buy them easily - except I've never managed to pick them at the right stage - and like the others I'm not convinced there is a right stage.

There are plenty of unusual and challenging crops that are well worth the effort - at this point I think I'll start a new thread...

Cheers.

I've only succeeded with okra under glass and grow because its flowers are absolutely exquisite. There's a bit of a crop but not worth it just for that.

I managed to grow it in the big greenhouse a couple of years ago... pretty flowers. Not enough crop to be worthwhile.
Asparagus pea.. very pretty plant and flowers grow it to edge a border... don't bother trying to eat it.
Strawberry Spinach... likewise..

yes asparagus pea is a talking point. 9 out of 10 people will say- what;s that pretty plant, and 1 out of 10 will say - you're not growing that are you? It;s rubbish  :D

Love Okra, had a nightmare growing it as do not get a lot of crop too make it worthwhile. You must have a very large greenhouse to make it worthwhile
