Did you soak them is warm water first? That seems to make quite a difference.

Or knick the hard coating to get the water in...  :-\

I didint do either but have so far pricked out 30 into pots and still have half a seed tray of dejected seedlings in the corner of the greenhouse.  I would pot loads more up for the plant sale but having to write Blue Morning Glory on labels 30 times over is putting me off  :)

On the other hand my Nasturtiums have failed to come up!

Always soak them overnight. This makes a big difference.

Mine all came up, though I didn't soak or nick them, but out of about 15 seedlings, all but 2 have been eaten by slugs  >:(

But sounds like soaking or nicking would help you if germination is the problem. I think you might have time? They grow fast once they start. Has anyone tried starting them off now? It says on my seed packet you can sow direct outside from Apr - May. (I won't do it, as it would only give the slugs greater pleasure  >:()

(yes ipomoeia)

Yes, I've started them in June. They grow extremely fast and flower very quickly.

Tried to grow in a hanging basket last yr but they suffered from jack of moisture. Don't think mine were soaked overnight - they're pretty easy to germinate.

This yr am growing Mina Lobata, a climber with gorgeous flame red, orange yellow flowers. Anyone tried these before? What's the minimum size pot can I get away with?

I've grown them before... but not sure about pot size...  :-\

hey saddad :D

did you enjoy growing the Mina Lobata - or rather have you grown it again? As I've not got the lotti in order for the ornamentals, I'm still growing my climbers in pots at the house. So I'm wondering if they'll be ok in them, or not...

We went through an ornamental climber stage... also grew Canary creeper and one with red tubular flowers whose name eludes me for the moment... they do ok in big pots..

err no, tonybloke  :o

saddad: yep, it's the Eccremocarpus scaber - saved seeds that i got from a seed swap earlier this yr. I've surface sown them (with a bit of vermiculite) in a heated propagator (March time) and nothing's happened. What I did notice today in the pot that I had last yr that had Chilean Glory previously, is covered with a climber (rather straggly in habit, fine foilage, v. similar to Herb Robert) so I reckon this has self-seeded. What I don't want is a weed that I've left to flower! Let's hope it's the C. Glory ;D ;D

Does it have any tendrils? CG does, herb robert doesn't.
We do have some Mina Lobata growing too... OH informs me...  :-X

yep, it's got tendrils and that means it's self-seeded. how lucky i am to find it's done that when my March-sown ones failed on me! ;D

sorry Macmac ::) ::) for hijacking your thread. getting back to MGs, I'd love to have the purpley variety to grow, but decided that I didnt want to overspend on my seed order this yr (£15! - guess what, half of them didn't germinate! but MG does v. easily from seed)

Oh dear sounds like you had bad seed, I would have took them back and changed them.

I bought some dud Runner bean seed once and the company gave me fresh seed.

Morning Glory can be slow to germinate but my soaking in warm water for 24 hours it will help them to germinate.
