Title: Begonias
Post by: Angel on May 02, 2011, 09:24:53
I ordered some small trailing begonia plug plants from a gardening catalogue...

They looked fine when they arrived, so I potted them up straight away but probably half of them have died... they seem to just rot ??

Is there something I have done wrong ... I only watered them.

I bought some trailing begonias from Unwins and I wasn't very happy with them. They were so small when they arrived and have taken ages to get going. However I also ordered some of the common fibrous begonias and although they came later they are a good size.
I think the secret is to water from the bottom otherwise they rot. They tend to get mold if they get too wet.

The survivors have made quite an improvement over the past week.. I had almost written them off !!

I really hope I get a nice display from them, as they look fantastic  :)

We all do things in different ways and for different reasons but I have never understood why we water things from the bottom, in nature the rain comes down so everything gets water from the top, I think the trouble is we tend to overwater. I never water anything from the bottom and have grown many things in my 60 plus years as a pro gardener. Please do not change your ways because I do it different as that is what makes gardening so interesting.
