Title: My sweet peas look weird
Post by: bikegirllisa on May 01, 2011, 13:51:36
This is the first year I tried growing my own sweet peas, rather than buying in over-priced seedlings.  I followed the instructions on the seed packet, and now I have a lot of really tall seedlings with a few leaves.  I pinched out the seedlings after the first set of leaves in the hope they would bush out a bit, but they are now just spindly and sad looking.

I think I will probably plant them out anyway in the hope they butch up a bit once they're in the ground.  Am I delusional, or might that actually do the trick? ???

They'll be fine... ;) Those what you buy have been in well lit greenhouses and will look nice and stocky. But if yours haven't quite had the same amount of light..(have they been grown on windowsill?)..will look bit spindly and sparce.
Get them into ground and they will sort themselves...start digging your vases out of cupboard..you'll be picking them soon.. ;D

Mine are on the kitchen windowsill looking rather thin & spindly. Like goodlife says it's just a lack of sunshine. Once they get outside they might sit there for a couple of days, but they'll rocket off soon enough.  ;D

Mine were looking spindly too before I planted them out, they have been out 2 weeks now and are growing nicely, now they are ready to be fastened to the poles I have put in for them and are bushing out nicely.  I'm sure yours will come on once they are outside in the sun (and rain!!)  ;)

I planted half of my seedlings in a flower bed at home, and half at the plot.

The half at home are doing wonderfully - standing up tall and putting on new leaves. ;D  The half at the plot appear to have pegged it. :'(

I was going to throw in the towel with the ones on the plot and dig them up - but Him Indoors has convinced me to give them another few days and keep watering them.  But either way, I will have some lovely flowers in a few weeeks I think!

I grow from autumn sown seed and will be picking the first blooms this week. they are now about4 feet high so will need layering before long. We had to move from our tied cottage and I tried to sell the plants as we have no garden now but I managed to get permission to have a row in a grass area I am glad now nobody wanted the plants although I only give the flowers away apart from doing one local show.
