Title: Great year for fruit & nuts
Post by: pg on May 01, 2011, 08:36:13
Just been wandering among the fruit trees/bushes and hazel hedges and noticed that all that blossom that was around the other week has set - there seems to be tons and tons of setting cherries, apples, damsons, gooseberries, hazelnuts, pears etc etc.

Not sure what I'm going to do with it all!

Anyone else feeling fruity?

Absolutely - my cherry, apple and pear trees plus the raspberries look like they might crack under the wieght and next door's currant bushes are heaving with tiny fruit..
I still haven't finished last year's jam yet!

I was weeding my fruit beds yesterday and noticed my black currant bushes beginning to fruit, i was so excited as this is my first year on an allotment, my apples, cherrys  are still in bloom, but my raspberrys have taken on a new lease of life. the weeds are a pain in the bum though, it took me 4 hours to take all the weeds out of my alotment.  :D

It IS looking fabulous right now - but beware.  Don't count your apples before they are ripe, as the old saw doesn't quite put it.

We've had some difficult summers in recent years, and the June drop is yet to come.

Just saying.

None of my blackcurrant / redcurrant / whitecurrant bushes have not flowered at all, plenty of new growth but it looks like no fruit again this year. The raspberries next to them look like they're going to produce a bumper crop so don't know why the currants are failing.

Loads of developing goosegogs, worcesterberry and blackcurrant on my bushes.  To early to see how many apples are developing and 2 trees are still in flower.  Rasps are budding up nicely, especially the gold one that looks like it has finally established.
Will just have to see how many drop off the bushes when the usual bad mid june weather hits...

On my knees weeding the fruit border yesterday afternoon, I noticed that my morello cherry and damson trees are going to be heaving with fruit.  Not too sure about the bramley apple though.

Raspberries, blueberries and loganberries are looking good, but the blackberry looks like it has got the right hump and has basically put on a lot of leaves and not much else.  Maybe it misses the previous lottie owner?  May have to go sweet talk it a bit... ;D

we already have peaches the size of a 5p piece, pears a 10p pice, loads of white, pink red and blackcurrants showing, still have a couple of portions of gooseberries and blackcurrant in the freezer  ;D
