Did you bury them? They only grow for me if I leave the seeds on the surface.

I find if I use a small seed tray filled with good quality seed compost ,then stand this in a tray of water to wet but not saturate  the compost. sow seeds on top of this compost  then cover with seed grade vermiculite, give this a light spay of diluted cheshunt compound.put the tray in a clear freezer bag using a thin strip of polythene
(old tye Rap) to make a tent  pop this in a propagator set a surface temperature of  the bed to 21 degrees. Seeds appear in less than 7 days. This  method works for me and I grow approximately 12000 different bedding plants a year only a few varieties require just surface sowing with no vermiculite. This may sound a long winded way to do it but  this year all my seeds have germinated and none have damped off. Hope this helps

Going off-thread, but if you want to see a beautiful display of violas, go to Brodsworth Hall (between Doncaster and Barnsley). We went today.
