Post by: clackvalve on April 25, 2011, 21:30:29
I planted 3 asparagus roots on 12 March and planted them exactly as i said and none have shown yet. Does anyone know how long they take to come through?

I'd give them a week or two yet... and If it's been dry give the bed a good soaking...  :-\

How much watering though... no good just damping the surface... needs to get down to the crown... did you "soak" them before planting..  :-\

Asparagus crowns HAVE to shoot after being planted! If they don't, they cannot build up the roots for a good year next year. If they don't shoot at all in their first year, they are definitely dead.

Maybe rugbypost is referring to the fact that you must never cut the first or second year shoots, but leave them to develop for the sake of growing healthy roots.

The first shoots can be very tiny, wiry and insignificant, though. Could you have missed them?

Dont give up on them though, my first plot mine sulked until late july and then put up leaf. So just treat them well and give them a few months you never know.
