Title: Fruit tree producers
Post by: summergirl on January 21, 2005, 16:48:31
This is the year that I am definitely going to acquire a plum tree and some raspberry canes.  But, (and I think this is what put me off last year) I don't know where to get them from.
There seem to be hundred's of suppliers - does anybody have a recommendation for any in particular.
Thx

I've had apples and raspberries from Ken Muir (www.kenmuir.co.uk) and they've done well. This year I went with Adams Apples http://www.talatonplants.co.uk/index.htm -who are a lot cheaper. The grafts on the trees look 'rougher' although the trees themselves seem healthy, time will tell.

I have used R V Rogers  at Pickering for a couple of years now, both fruit bushes and roses/shrubs. Very happy with the service and quality of plants. They also have a very large selection.

Thanks.

I've now ordered them.

I hope my enthusiasm doesn't wear off once I have real work to do!

I think fruit is less work than veg -after all you only plant them once so you don't have prepare the ground every year.

Dunno about that Jeremy, the darn fruit cage that I have constructed is such a work or art it deserves a place at the Tate!  Could have sown, weeded, harvested and cooked veggies in the time this fruit prison has taken!  :P

But if you flog it to Tate Modern................

BTW was it you who was using an old Frame tent frame for a while? I'd thought of giving a try...just need to arrange an accident for the tent  ;D

I agree, Jeremy, fruit is less work than veg but they need different care.
very careful with fertiliser (nitrogen- only leaves, less fruit) But keep grass and weeds away from base. Think about pruning and pollination and do not forget the fight against maggots, scub, black bugs, firblight, rabbits etc.etc. ;D ;D, but when you see the ripe plums and raspberries......... :P :P :P

True Lady C. definately a case of 'measure twice, cut once' right from the beginning, unlike most veg. where you can start over each year.

I have Jeremy.  Had an old frame tent and worked the poles to suit the shape I needed.  Very sturdy and a good height for me and the fruit.  Problem now, I have inherited more currant bushes, altho I think there are only about 8 alive on plot number 2, but these are going to all want netting!  Going to have to drag Ava to the plot, tools in hand!  ::)
