Title: Strawberry Barrel
Post by: greatpalm on April 22, 2011, 10:15:43
Hi

I was thinking of purchasing a strawberry barrell similar to this

http://www.primrose.co.uk/strawberry-barrels-c-734_756.html?source=googleads&gclid=COT1zrnjr6gCFcod4QodBwirHg

If anybody has tried this how did you get on?

Thanks.
Steve

Hi - this barrel is sold on Amazon and the reviews are a bit mixed tbh.  But you can see the merit of the product if you love strawberries, lack vast amts of space and have a bit of spare cash to buy it.  Sorry that is not much help but it does make you think about creating something similar yourself and also if you are giving this vertical gardening thing a try.

I bought a cheaper version a couple of months ago, similar to the patio bag they show on that page. I bought 20 small strawberry plants, put 12 in the ground and 8 in the bag. The ones in the planter are doing much much better. I think this is mainly due to the compost used but the fruit is kept off the ground so avoiding ants and any other nasties, and they seem to ripen more evenly. If the trend continues, I'd be tempted to get a couple more for next year.
