Went to B@Q today to have a look at the plants. Apart from carrots in pots they had a wonderful display of cherry tomato plants fully mature with half the tomatoes ready to pick (in April!!!) seven pounds for one plant. What I want to know is, apart from these being the most expensive tomatoes on earth, Would they last for the whole summer or burn themselves out. They also had fully mature chilli plants with big red chillies on them for the same price.
Yes it's a con...
they are selling half hardy bedding... prayiing for a late frost... so they can sell you them again.. ;D
wow, that's early, ours have only just gone into their final pots for the plant sale and that's early, I guess they will fizzle out quicker, I suppose you could take some cuttings to extend the season. I think I'll adjust the pricing, ours are going for 50p ;D
There is an old saying " If there are people stupid enough to buy them there are people stupid enough to sell them"
Yes.........
I saw them yesterday when out to get some tomatoes and other plants for nursery school - Couldnt believe it when I saw them, felt like stopping some silly person putting them in his trolley, but he was bigger than me and didnt want to upset him.
I didnt buy them, they defo taking the mick !

There is an old saying " If there are people stupid enough to buy them there are people stupid enough to sell them"
Shouldnt that say ".....there are people SMART enough to sell them"
Having said that, I have been stupid enough to sow squashes and beans indoors (no greenhouse) too early, and today have been forced to take them up to allotment as they are crawling up the windows. Netting tunnels, fleece, prayers and anxiety.....
At least I have spent no more than the seeds and my time and effort, and I might get away with it.....
I have certainly seen all these plants + carrots! and all sorts of unsuitable things on sale at my local garden centre at amazing prices. Am waiting to see sprouted potatoes at £1 a single pot.
B & Q, Focus and the likes of Homebase are NOT garden centres. They will take your money off you no matter what. At this time of year, leave the plants with the nursery, GC or shed until it is safe to plant them out. Let the retailers look after them until it is safe to plant them.
Could they have been the grafted ones they were showing on GW a few weeks ago.?
M D, said they were £3-50 each :o :o, but £7 gosh robbers or what!!!!!!
If you are going to plant up hanging baskets (as I am) then you need to plant these up now so they are established ready to go out at the beginning of June, so I am pleased to be able to purchase things like geraniums and ivy leaf geraniums and fuchsias now (B&Q price £5 for six very sturdy plants - less 10% pensioners discount), plus infill things like lobelia and petunias. Also people may not be going to plant them out immediately - 'garden centres' like Wyevale and local nurseries in this area are also selling half hardy bedding plants.
