We decided this year to sow sprouts outside in a finely tilthed seed bed. They came up, I thinned them, and now they've gone! Just the tiny stems are left. They look sort of shrivelled. Could it be lack of water, or has something eaten them? There are plenty of weeds sprouting up and they seem fine!
Woodlice do this in my greenhouse....if the stems are left, probably not slugs, those beasties eat the lot. What a disappointment though when they were growing well. Try, try and try again.......
Oh..if there is just stems left sounds like birds have been visiting their 'salad bar'.
Ive just noticed a similar thing happening to seedlings but they are covered in a plastic cloche so cant be birds & not slugs as they eat the lot. I did find some ants on the soil surface & wondered if ants may be eating them?
RABBITS ?? OR MICE
Why don't rabbits and mice eat weeds?
Sow some more.
Do it in doors if you have to.
I never let my babies out until they are big enough to look after them selves.

They do, but they prefer nice juicy veg, the same as we do.
I lost several seedlings apart from the stems while they were in a Jumbo Propogator in the greenhouse. I cleared it all out, lifting the modules to inspect all the nooks and cranies underneath for slugs, when I lifted the last one I discovered a mouse had been sat watching me do it. It might have squeaked and saved me the trouble!
