Title: Apple grafts
Post by: Twoflower on April 13, 2011, 19:28:58

I tried grafting earlier this year, most of them have started to grow, but so have the root stock. My question is do i rub the root stock growth off, cut it back or just leave it?

As I understand it the root stock should not be allowed to grow at all. Just the tree above the graft.

I know with roses we chop it off of the root stock grows and assume the principle is the same although I must say I have never seen it happen with a fruit tree.

Rub it off; dig down to the root if you have to. That way you shouldn't get any regrowth. I chopped a root of one of my plums over the winter, where it was getting in the way of my veg. I'm getting suckers from there now.
