Title: fertilisers this month
Post by: tomatoada on April 13, 2011, 11:36:26
I would be interested to know what of the above the experienced gardeners are using, and which vegetables need them.

I have bonemeal, chicken pellets and BF and B.

The bean trench is ready.
Japanese and ordinary onions doing well.
Cabbage plants planted  yesterday.
Broad beans and potatoes just above ground.
Raspberry and strawberry plants looking OK.

Any advice please.

BFB (blood meal would be better) for the onions, BFB anda  bit of bonemeal for the cabbages, hope they had chicken poo under them when they went in) Bonemeal for the fruit with a little BFB, broadies don't need anything except good soil, they'll make their own .....

Thanks for reply.  I put the pellets round the cabbage plant as I planted.  I have made a note to dig in next time.
I forgot to mention lime.  When do you use it?

When it's needed, what's the pH of your soil?

I dig wood ash from the wood burner in first, for brassicas. Limes and injects pottasium in one go.

Lime goes on the brassicae bed and hoed in before they are planted.  I did it this year at the end of March.  Don't get club root any more.   :P

Plants  needs as Kev said Brassicas need lime and lime only, a firm soil so dont dig the year you are planting brassicas. Broad beans as you have dug your garden in the Autumn ready for spring add a little extra to the patch you are going to plant your broad beans . I personaly only add manure to my Brassica patch every other year but will lime every year  on the ground that will be for brassicas ;D
