Title: Someone removed our padlock !
Post by: picman on April 08, 2011, 08:58:55
For some mindless reason, someone took bolt cutters to our site gates padlock during Wednesday night, as far as we can tell nothing else is missing or damaged. We fortunately have a matching spare padlock, It is a concern that we are vulnerable in this area, If anyone has similar experience or can recommend a non cut-able lock I would appreciate their advice. (Our site is tucked away from street lamps, houses, footpaths etc we have excellent metal and hawthorn fencing to which we recently added some anti climb paint).

Well.

I bought a Quad Bike, and part of the insurance requirement is o lock it up with a padlock and chain that isnt cuttable with bolt croppers.  Now, hold onto your  hats, because what I ended up buying was a padlock and chain that cost £125, but its impossible to cut with croppers, the steel is so hard.

So try looking in the local motorbike shop, ABLOY make a good range.

Having said that, any chain/padlock can be got through with enough time and an angle grinder, even a battery one.

We had the same problem on our site, bolt cropping the lock or putting matchsticks in the key hole we had cheap multiple key type locks so although inconveniant we would just bang a new lock on the gate, when there was a match stick in the lock it was very little trouble to put a bar in the lock and give it a clout with a hammer and jump the lock which was then replaced while someone picked out the stick, you could try putting a thick metal box around the lock so you have to reach up inside to undo the lock this would make it very difficult to get bolt croppers on to the lock.

Thanks for the posts , looks like £30 quid for the lock and £200 for the keys.... needs a re-think I think.
