Title: Purple Majesty potatoes
Post by: Jayb on April 07, 2011, 10:46:00
I wondered if anyone else is growing a few Purple Majesty potatoes this year(mine are from supermarket spuds). I noticed mine a couple of days ago just showing through, nearly missed them because of the colour.

THe dark foliage problem is nothing like as bad as the "dark tuber" issue you'll have when harvesting.... only harvest in really good lighting conditions otherwise you'll struggle :D.... I certainly did last year with Congo and Vitelotte

Just been sorting mine out after having them in my bait fridge over winter.  About half had sprouted and the others were just showing signs of chitting.  As they're an experiment they'll be going into potato grow bags at home rather than the potential risk of infecting my lady christl, charlotte, gemson and pentland crown on the allotment.

;D I know what you mean Chrisc, it seems about the one draw back of purple/black potatoes...finding them!

I agree, always good to be on the safe side when growing supermarket potatoes, although I did come across an interesting thread on another forum which gave me the impression these potatoes had been raised to a good standard and health should not be a problem.

These have grown on quickly and now have flower buds. Stems and leaves have lost much of the dark colour although this is still noticable on the stems and flowers, which may possibly be white when they open?

Mine have lost their dark colour already not at pretty as Red Duke of York which still have very attractive dark red foliage.  They certainly looked very strange when they were chitting they looked as if they escaped from another planet or the set of Dr Who.
