Title: Too early to plant out brassica plants?
Post by: Dandytown on April 05, 2011, 10:13:49
I started my brassicas in feb and they are now in good shape with at least two sets of leaves.

Recently I overwatered which wouldnt have been a problem but there has been a lack of sunshine and as a result all the pots have a green film on the soil.

Does the mould only affect seedlings or will it also bring down plants as mentioned.  If so would I be better getting them outside so that I dont have to water as frequently since they tend to dry out quickly in the cold GH (can get up to 30 oC in there in past weeks).
Could the frost kill the plants if protected with just a plastic bottle?

Thanks in anticipation

THe green film is algae, not related to the damping off fungus I think you're alluding to....stand them in a tray of dry sand overnight, it'll suck the spare water out of the compost.... what are the brassicas, some of them can be out already, some are less tolerant of low temperatures.... can you leave them out through the day and bring them in at night?

My seedlings are still in pots, but outside. If I grow them slow and hard, then hopefully they should be less attractive to slugs when they go out.

Wish I had read your message chris before I planted out sprouting red brocc, AYR cauli and brussels yesterday all under bottle clotches. Brocc still in GH.

They had some good growth on but were running the risk of getting leggy, even on the bottom shelf of the GH.

Fingers crossed they will be fine but I should sow a back up just in case.

Would a layer of grit on the soil help with future sowings while I try and learn to water correctly  :)?
