Title: Other plants to put in asparagus patch?
Post by: TISH on April 01, 2011, 10:23:10
Hi -

Am finally putting in my aspargus bed but wondered if I could get away with growing anything else in the bed while the plants are getting established - like salad? It will be about 12m by 1m in size. Any ideas of things that I can squeeze in that wont be bad for the establishing 1 yr crowns I will be putting in?

Thx

Radish around the outside... and shallow rooting crops like lettuce... don't overdo it though as you are trying to build up the crowns..  :)

I heard a bit of parsley was a good companion plant

Parsley around the edge would look pretty too...  :)

I usually put some outdoor tomatoes in my asparagus bed. They are good companions too and the asparagus "ferns" support the tomatoes a bit too.
