Title: Seed quantities ?
Post by: mentallot on March 30, 2011, 18:33:29
Just opened up some T&M tom seeds - stunned. 10 seeds in the pack. Is this now the norm or specific to T&M or just my bad luck ?

Cheers !

T&M packets hold as few as 5 seeds  :(

For something like Sungold from T and M then that would be correct.
Get some Roma seeds from Franchi Seeds and you'll get hunderds if not thousands.
It normally says the number of seeds in the catalog or on the packet..

It normally says on the packet how many seeds there are meant to be in each packet. Prices vary greatly, as does the amount of seeds depending on the variety, some are 99p for 50 seeds, some can be as much as 3.49 for 6 seeds

I have taken to counting small numbers of seeds because they seem to be getting fewer in the packets.  I returned a Florian strawberry packet last year for not having the declared 15 seeds.  Got 17 in the second packet.

The more expensive the packet the fewer seeds in my experience.  I wait until seeds are on half price offer or 50p a packet.

I sell excess plants to raise money for our allotment society.

Last year I charged 25p for most plants but having worked out that the seed, compost and pot alone could cost 70p I have changed my pricing strategy and in some cases the RPI has gone up as much as 200%. I wonder what the Governer of the Bank of England would make of that and has he included it in the index?

I love this place:

www.moreveg.co.uk

because it sells small number of seeds at much cheaper prices, means I dont waste as much seed and get to try more varieties. Less seeds can be a good thing if they are at the right price.

If it was an F1 then 10 was quite generous.  I only got 5 or six in my packets of F1s.

I like Franchi Seeds too. I couldn't believe the amount of tomato seeds in one of their packs !!(loads of seeds).  Their seeds can be a little more expensive but they are excellent value for money. Especially when bought during the Wyevale 50% off Sale  ;D

I suppose it could be OK for some small quantities or if you are wanting to trial a few first;   but be aware that many seeds it sells for 50 for 50p for example - you can buy packs of 5-800 seeds for £1.  They would last a few years so could be cheaper in the long run.

Grow them, and if you like them save some seed. It's easy to do, and don't be put off if it's an F1; it still works.
