Post by: staris on March 28, 2011, 17:38:44
a friend of mine has told me that he has seen an automatic watering system that could be used in a poly tunnel ,it's not run from the mains but from a water barrel thats raised up and has a battery powered timer on it, has anyone got one, are they any good and any idea where you get them from  :)

ALl that's important is the timer.... most of them need a bit of pressure in the system.... I have seen them on ebay though can't find one ATM, there's too many other water timers out there......

I made my own automatic watering system for my greenhouse several years ago, without a timer.
It needs more than one barrel to feed it, as the pressure goes down as the water is fed to the adjustable sprinklers.
For details, see this page :-  http://www.growyourown.info/page20.html

I have one of these Hozelock Aqua Control Water Computer Plus (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0011NMJ8Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=aldershomodel-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B0011NMJ8Q) it seems to work with a ball valve so it should work fine with the low pressure.

I built my own watering system for the greenhouse, 12v battery powered with a water supply from a big poly tank , a motorized valve was originally used, I did publish the design in an electronics magazine in 2006 (EPE) , however some specialist knowledge would be required to build it.  Later  I found a switched pump was a more effective method , this came on as per a program , in the growing season about 10 secs every 4 hours , ( 6 tom plants ) between 10am to evening time, another benefit  is adding feed to the water and the water is same temperature as plants. its still working.
