Yayyyyyy my asparagus is starting, picked my first 1/2 dozen or so yesterday, yum!
Tempted with mine thias year.... got 48 plants in pots.... need 20 or so to plant out, 10 -15 are allocated to a mate.... I could just harvest the rest to death.... but I'm tempted to sell themcos I ought to be able to make a bit for them at a car-boot.....

mine is about 2" high so wont be long before im enjoying the short lived delicacy of mine ;D
Guess what, Lidl's have white asparagus plants. Just trying to work out where I can put some.
I have a couple of spears sticking through the mulch... :)

I can't believe all this asparagus! Mine is quite long established and vigorous, but I never get anything until mid to late April. East Sussex.....
Don't panic ours aren't nearly ready to eat... just a thumbnail's size lump sticking through the mulch.. :)

We dedicated a large bed to them for several years but found that they took up a lot of room for the yield and were work intensive with the weeds they attracted. Then there is the untidy period where they get straggly .
No more. Much as we like them. It is one thing we buy at the local market along with mushrooms, celery and for the greater part carrots.
Some things are best grown by the professionals.
I know that statement will attract contradiction.
However it is only fair to say that mixed growing is not always ideal.
It is worth trying all sorts, just for the sake of adventure, experience and discovery..
In the end, if one grows for cooking then there are some fruits and vegetables not worth the bother and others which are well worth the trouble.
A matter of personal choice. We sometimes have to find out for ourselves.

no such thing as a crop that 'attracts weeds' ??
untidy period? look straggly? mine look verdant and very bushy after I stop picking spears on midsummers day
did you ever feed and mulch the asparagus bed?
