Title: potting on
Post by: shirlton on March 20, 2011, 14:22:07
Have just finished potting on 60 Tomato plants and 180 dahlias. I really don't like it when they are all ready at the same time.

Some plants are for our plant sale at Walsall Rd and the rest will be grown on for our own use e.g fresh pureed and frozen and of course the August open day in aid of the Air ambulance and Macmillan.Tomato plants and fruit sell themselves

I am now worried as i haven't planted anything yet - too busy getting plot ready!  I have spuds chitting, should i plant them out now?  I did throw a few broad beans in at the weekend, just as a test really, don't like them myself and as i was given them so no loss if they don't grow - be sods law they will grow and i'll have bucket loads!  I've got one of those mini movable greenhouse thingies so maybe i should start some seed off in that, although i vowed only to do spuds this year - got the bug you see  ;D

There is still plenty of time for you to get things going. I start early so that the plants are a good size to sell by May

Well here we can expect frost until about the middle of May so I'm not rushing to plant/sow much. My potatoes are chitting and the bed is fleeced to warm it up but they won't go in before the end of the month. I reckon the tomatoes can be sowed round about then too. I have celeriac, cauliflower, leeks, spring onions, brussel sprouts + herbs and flowers in seed trays all about to be pricked out and potted on.
