Post by: Digeroo on March 08, 2011, 19:56:09
Need recommendations please for a good but also cheap wheelbarrow.  Last one too cheap so died rather quickly.  Wheel not strong enough.

I purchased a black one with yellow handles from B&Q 3 months ago.  It has done some graft already and is large too.  Cost £35.

Wickes have the basic Chillington barrows at around £35 for the smaller one, and £45 for the larger.  Both excellent and long lasting for allotment use.

I got one for, I think, £25 from B & Q about 8-9 years ago, when the original one was stolen. The only problem is that I have to dose the tyre with green gunk to keep it up as the walls aren't thick enough to keep hawthorn spikes out. It's an unusual site, but the ideal is undoubtedly a builders' barrow with a tyre that withstands anything.

I got a bright orange one from B&Q, but we have since swapped the wheel fro a bright green solid one as there are so many brambles.
It really is a bright sight for sore eyes but no one wil nick it.

I picked up one of the bright orange ones from B and Q about 3 months ago and have used it a few days a week since - it seems to be holding up pretty well. Our paths are a state, but it seems to handle them pretty well.  I've used it for general garden waste and for shifting rubble about and its handled both pretty well.

At £35 it gets my vote.

There are plenty about, but the trouble is finding one that suits you.
Depending on what you wish for they range from £30- the ridiculous.
I myself have a metal one and would use it for all sorts of things, muck spreading, concrete mixing, shifting bags of compost and many other uses.
Durability, strength, and cost are the main factors to consider.
Then you can narrow the field down to what you want and what you can afford.
On another note if you want to add this to the wish list then it may come in handy down the Lottie.

I have a Chillington wheel barrow and like the advert says on the back of their trucks 'A friend for life', also British made which is very unusual, :)
